This spring I became co-owner of a small-scale farm focused on producing vegetables incorporating sustainable methods. Since the first seeds were planted, I have felt the highs of tasting the fruits of my labor (literally) and the lows of realizing that the bugs won, at least temporarily. As I focus on 2015, I reflect on what this year has taught me and share my successes and failures, in hopes of conveying what I’ve learned along my journey.

Pumpkins are lining store walkways and decorating homes everywhere. This can only mean one thing; Halloween is almost here. Pumpkins are members of the cucurbit, or gourd family, which also include squash, cucumbers and melons. Pumpkins are a good source of fiber, potassium, vitamin C and Beta-carotene/vitamin A.

For most, the cooler months are a sign that gardening is coming to an end. However, those located in warm climates are in the midst of a fall garden. Our farm is in Zone 8b and even though I planted later than I wanted to (September), we’ll still be able to get a decent harvest before our first freeze, sometime in mid-November.
